Hold that thought about JFK flying over Canyonlands just two weeks prior to his assassination ... and let me introduce something that I will return to ... Stewart Udall as Secretary of The Interior .. under both Kennedy and Johnson was instrumental in designating the Canyonlands area as a National park in 1964.
Today, as in 1964, the park consists of 4 non-contiguous areas ... Island In The Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the Colorado and Green River Systems. Edward Abbey referred to the park as the 'most weird, wonderful. magical place on earth - there is nothing like it anywhere' ... meaning that this area is the most primitive and primordial of any in the United States ... unchanged since the dawn of man ... the Maze district itself being the most inaccessible and remote areas of the United States.
One more reference to this before I move on ... change is a constant in geologic time ... we can't see that change in a single lifetime ... but continents are moving and the mass exposed to the atmosphere on those continents is in a constant stage of corrosion and erosion ... but in Canyonlands nothing seems to change ... the neanderthal would have seen it as we see it ...
Now .. an abrupt change of subject .. with a purpose ...
During the Civil War years ... life was pretty normal, unless the front lines were engaged in your neck of the woods ... travel between the North and the South was still possible .. especially if you were in the entertainment business ... both sides need a laugh ...
In the latter part of March 1865, a young 25 year old actor passed through Utah on his way home to Washington DC ... Utah was clearly off the beaten path for his return trip form Louisiana .. on the 14 April 1865, the young actor shot Abraham Lincoln in the back of the head ... Lincoln would die the next morning.
Booth shot Lincoln .... Abraham (Zapruder) shot (with film) Kennedy ... Andrew Johnson succeeded Lincoln ... Lyndon Johnson succeeded Kennedy ...Booth was in Utah prior to the shooting of Lincoln ... Kennedy was in Utah 2 weeks before he was killed ...
Booth was in Utah to visit his brother-in-law ... who was the postmaster ... William Pierce ... but that's not the most interesting part ....
To quote from verse 1865 of the Krome Koan,
' ... confidence is the feeling you have before you understand the situation ... '
